Microplastics: the bottled water a village buys has more plastic in it than the tap it stopped trusting

There is still no enforceable limit for microplastics in drinking water anywhere. What there is, increasingly, is evidence — and one finding that turns the usual advice upside down.

Microplastics are one of the few water contaminants where the honest summary is that nobody yet knows how much harm they do. We want to say that at the start, because this is a subject where alarm outruns evidence in one direction and dismissal outruns it in the other.

What is established is presence. Microplastics — fragments below five millimetres, and the far smaller nanoplastics below one micrometre — have been found in tap water, in bottled water, in soil, in rain, in the deep ocean, and in human tissue. A 2025 study in Nature Medicine reported microplastics accumulating in human brain tissue, and found concentrations rising in more recent samples compared with older ones. What that exposure does over a lifetime is genuinely not yet known.

What is not established is a safe level, or an unsafe one. There is no enforceable limit for microplastics in drinking water in the European Union, the United States, or anywhere else. That is beginning to move: the European Commission intends to add microplastics to the watch list under the Drinking Water Directive, which brings monitoring and a guidance value rather than a hard limit, and in April 2026 the US EPA added microplastics to its draft Contaminant Candidate List for the first time. California already requires testing. All of that is the beginning of measurement, not the end of an argument.

And then there is the finding that matters most for the way people actually behave.

In January 2024, researchers at Columbia and Rutgers published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences using a technique that could see particles far smaller than previous methods. They found an average of roughly 240,000 detectable plastic particles per litre of bottled water — ten to a hundred times more than earlier estimates had suggested, with about ninety per cent of them nanoplastics, the size class nobody had been able to count before.

We have a particular reason to care about that. One of the villages we are working to reach, outside Thessaloniki, is buying bottled water week after week — as a great many institutions and families across Greece do, at real and continuing expense. The plastic is not incidental to that choice. The bottle, the cap and the industrial process of filling it are where a large share of those particles are understood to come from.

So the family that switched to bottled water for safety may well have increased its plastic exposure while paying more, generating waste, and — this is the part that stings — leaving the actual question of what is in the tap water entirely unanswered. Nitrate, lead and arsenic do not care whether anyone bought bottles.

None of this means bottled water is dangerous. It means it is not the solution it is being sold as, and it is a remarkably expensive way to not find out what you are drinking.

What is worth doing instead is unglamorous. Find the published analysis for your own supply. If there is a real contaminant in it, treat it at the point of use with something certified for that specific contaminant. Reverse osmosis membranes and fine filtration physically exclude particles at these scales as a side effect of doing their actual job, which is a reasonable answer to microplastics without needing to settle the health question first.

For the homes the Foundation serves, this is also simply arithmetic. A children’s home buying bottled water is spending money every single week, forever, on a product with unresolved questions of its own. A filtration system is paid for once and serviced periodically. The Foundation funds both parts, because a system nobody maintains is how a good decision quietly turns into a bad one.
