Our mission

Clean water should not depend on someone's ability to pay for it.

Our mission, in one sentence.
What we do

We fund water systems — and we keep them running.

  • Fund the equipment. The Foundation pays for purification systems in homes, shelters and care facilities that could not otherwise afford them.
  • Work with local specialists. Qualified water-treatment companies design and fit every system. In Greece, our partner is NearonYdor.
  • Prove the water is clean. Laboratory testing, including by the University of Athens and the Hellenic Pasteur Institute.
  • Pay for the servicing. Filters replaced, systems maintained — year after year, which is the part that actually keeps children safe.
What we do not do

Being clear about this matters as much.

  • We do not hand over equipment and leave. A filter nobody maintains quietly stops protecting anyone.
  • We do not install what we cannot afford to keep. A system we cannot service is a promise we cannot honour.
  • We do not sell anything. Nothing is charged to the homes we serve, and there is no cost to asking us.
  • We do not claim other people's work. The Foundation funds; local companies install. We say which is which.
Who we serve

Children who did not choose where they live.

A family can filter its own water. A child in a children's home, a shelter or supported housing cannot — they drink whatever comes out of that building's tap, and no one asks them.

That is the gap the Foundation exists to close. Not because the water is necessarily illegal, but because safe by regulation is not the same as free of every emerging contaminant — and children absorb more of it, for their body weight, than adults do.

Where we are going

The same promise, in more places.

Three SOS Children's Villages programmes in Greece already drink water the Foundation provided. A fourth village outside Thessaloniki is still buying bottled water. And the next chapter is in the United States, beginning in Florida.

Water is not a luxury. It is life.
