The terrible water crisis estimates that more than 2 billion people worldwide live in countries with severe water shortages.

In response, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) also reported that “other estimates are more pessimistic. As many as 4 billion people-more than half of the earth’s population-have faced severe water stress for at least a month. In one year alone, 5 billion people suffered permanent water shortage pressure.”

It is common knowledge that Africa has been facing water shortages and water quality issues. That means, even where water is available, the water is not drinkable. The situation worsens whenever drought cases are reported, making it easier for the local community to access water.

The UN refugee agency said that ethnic fighting in Cameroon for scarce resources has triggered a mass exodus of more than 30,000 refugees to neighboring Chad.

On December 5, a deadly clash broke out in Ouloumsa, a village on the border of Cameroon, after herders, fishermen, and farmers quarreled over water shortages. Violence then spread to neighboring villages, and hostile forces among the communities razed 10 villages to the ground.

Cape Town- The Somali government declared a state of emergency after the committee set up to assess the drought situation in the country submitted a report. In a statement, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Robl called on the people of Somalia, clergy, businesses, and the international community to provide assistance to those affected.

In rural Tsita in the Eastern Cape, school-age children spend hours fetching and carrying water for their families. The principal of the local high school blamed this on the high dropout rate and the sharp drop in enrollment.
The municipality stated that the water supply project (R28 million) is expected to be completed in March 2022.
