The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group has approved a new water policy that prioritizes water security and the conversion of water assets in order to promote the sustainable and inclusive economic growth of regional member countries.

Since 2010, the African Development Bank has invested approximately US$6.2 billion in water supply and sanitation service delivery.

Water shortage is a growing problem worldwide.

Overuse, population growth, and climate change have contributed to desperate conditions, and violent extremist organizations (VEOs) are turning scarce water into a weapon. This trend is most obvious in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), which is a region that is vital to the national security interests of the United States.

Experts said on Wednesday that the Horn of Africa region is struggling to cope with the loss of biodiversity caused by climate change, which is exacerbating hunger, water stress, poverty, and resource conflicts. Levis Kavagi, Regional Coordinator for Ecosystems and Biodiversity Africa of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said that rising temperatures pose an existential threat to the habitat of the Greater Horn of Africa.

Water is essential to the balance of the environment.

As a liquid, it contributes to the formation of landforms and the emergence of life (plants, animals, and humans), and is vital to its maintenance. As a gas, water forms a barrier in the atmosphere, protecting the biosphere from solar ultraviolet radiation.
